wedding: the shower

The weekend before last, my mom and sister threw me an Italian themed bridal shower. It was amazing! When my mom first proposed the idea to me, I was a little hesitant. The traditional bridal shower isn't really my style, plus I was already having a beer and booze shower (will post up soon). But my mom had some really awesome ideas, the first one being the overall theme - Italy! Our honeymoon is in Italy and one of our registries is setup to donate to our honeyfund. My mom and sister came up with some other amazing ideas including:
  • Italian Themed Invitations
  • Italian Soda Bar
  • Oil & Vinegar Tasting
  • Italian Style Hors D'Oeuvres
  • Basil Plant Favors
  • Traditional Italian Cannoli's and Cookies for Dessert
Everything turned out great and our guests raved about how fun and creative the party was. Here are some photos from the day. Thanks to Amanda Sause & Amy Storkel for the photos.

wedding: the invitation

the save-the-date
Long before I was even engaged, I knew I wanted to do a postcard for our save-the-date. It's the most economical since it doesn't use an envelope and the stamps are cheaper! Plus, I love the look of postcards... it's like receiving a fun piece of mail from a distant friend.

I knew I wanted to use an engagement photo on our save-the-date, so I made sure to tell my photographer to take lots of photos that had negative space, so I could add text. We had several beautiful photos to choose from, but we ultimately decided to go with one of the two of us wrapped in a blanket in a foggy field. I loved this photo because it was all neutral colors - perfect for our neutral color palette. I also liked the use of the blanket which reminded me of lace, our theme! The save-the-date is the first stationary piece that our guests would see, so I wanted to already set the mood and tone of our wedding.

The typography is fun and a little rustic. We went with witty wording on the back of the postcard. And have carried this quirkiness throughout all of our wedding stationary. I wanted our pieces to show our personalities... and let's face it, Ryan & I are a bit weird!

the invitation
I am very lucky that I work at an automotive company that has a laser machine. At work, we use the machine to etch on seat belts, shift knobs and buttons. But I realized I could use this awesome machine to my advantage for my wedding - and I sure did! I had seen several beautiful invitations on Pinterest that used wood, and I thought to myself, "hey, I think I can do that!" So I went on the search for real wood that I could etch into. I found this awesome thin wood veneer at a local paper/press shop called Oblation. I was able to purchase the veneer in large pieces at a very reasonable price and then cut it down myself for the invitations.

The wood invitations are wrapped in a doily, tied with string and have a wood chip with our names and date as well as a card with extra information attached.

We aren't traditional, so we kept the wording simple and to the point. The last line on the invitation brings in our wittiness - "Ceremony Followed  By Dinner, Drinks And Awkward But Enthusiastic Dancing"

We setup online RSVPing, so we included a small card that instructed guests to visit our website. This piece was tied to the front of the invitation. We have a few guests who are computer challenged slash prefer a physical RSVP. So we designed some up. These are super fun... I'm actually sad everyone didn't get one, because I love how they turned out.

The invitations exceeded my expectations! I love the look of the rustic wood mixed with the elegant doily. It's exactly what I'm going for at my wedding... country elegance.

wedding: the ring

Curious about my engagement ring? Well, let's just say I'm obsessed with this little sparkly gem! Many have told Ryan "great job!" And its true, great job Ryan... for letting me pick out my own ring. Some think its tabu to pick out your own engagement ring, but I say hey, if you're going to spend that much money on me and I'm going to wear it for the rest of my life, it better be something I love! And its not that I don't have any confidence in Ryan, or think he doesn't know my style. But even I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted. I knew when I saw it, in that moment, I would know.

Ryan & I had been dating for 9 years, so it was no secret that a proposal was in the near future. I had a feeling he would be doing it soon and asked him if he knew what I wanted. I had been talking about how I wanted a vintage ring for awhile and even had a Pinterest board with several rings on it (check the board out here). He replied, "Ummm... I think I know what you want, but I would feel better if you picked it out. I want you to love it!" I am so glad he said this.

I did a lot of research beforehand, reading up on vintage style rings, average cost, some general terminology, local vintage jewelry shops, and felt confident that I would find my ring. Ryan and I also set a budget for ourselves, something very important. It was a saturday in August that we headed out to several stores in Portland. First on the list was a little shop called Antoinette's. A co-worker of mine had recommended it. He recently got a ring there for his now wife. It was a little hole-in-the-wall shop, but they had hundreds of beautiful vintage rings and the owner and her son were so knowledgable and helpful. I quickly fell in love with one... after trying on, like, a million. I didn't want to make any decisions right away. So we moved on to the next shop. Here I found 2 more rings that I loved. Now things were getting difficult. We ended up going to 2 more stores, but with no luck at either. Pooped from ring shopping, our eyes dilated from all the sparkle, we decided to sleep on it.

The next morning I woke up feeling a bit stressed, how was I going to decide on 1 of the 3 rings. At the time, I loved them all. I had to go try them on again! So, we headed out to the 2 shops again and I again I tried those rings on. This time, it felt different... it felt real when I put the first ring back on. It looked amazing on my hand, the fit was perfect, the diamond sparkled. And I knew then that it was the one. We ended up going back to the second shop to try on the 2 other rings, but they didn't quite live up. I felt a bit bad, because the first ring was the most expensive of the 3. But it was still in our budget and Ryan assured me that he wanted me to have the ring I loved. So, I went for it!

The funny part of this story is that I ended up going back in on my own to purchase the ring... not with my own money, but the shop was right on my way home from work, and WAY out of Ryan's way. So it made the most sense that I would go in and pick it up. It was pretty surreal yet it felt weird as the owner handed me the tiny box. It felt even more weird handing it over to Ryan when I got home. It was strange and kind of annoying that I had this beautiful ring sitting in my apartment, yet I couldn't wear it. Technically, Ryan hadn't proposed yet. And I had no idea when he would. It was 4 months until he proposed... 4 very long months! But the anticipation and build-up made it that much better. And when he finally did propose and I slipped the ring on my finger, I had no regrets about my decision, both on the ring or to marry Ryan. It was the perfect moment and the perfect ring and I couldn't be happier!

It is a platinum, art deco diamond ring from the 1930s. It's a transitional cut diamond. The detailing on the sides of the ring are amazing and my favorite part!

wedding: the flowers

Ryan & I are in the midst of finalizing our wedding florals and I thought I'd share with all of you what are plans are. We have a florist doing our bouquets and boutonnieres. And we will be arranging the flowers for the reception centerpieces. Our ceremony site is outside and already has a lot of plants surrounding it. We will probably keep this area simple and maybe do flower petals along the sides of the aisle, along with some simple hanging flowers in jars.

The reception centerpieces are a group project. I've enlisted several friends and family members to be on the lookout for inexpensive vases and jars from flea markets and second-hand stores. We will fill these with simple arrangements of flowers. We will also include some lace and wood rounds on the tables with small candles.

Engagement Photos - Sauvie Island

If you didn't have a chance to read my previous post, then I'll fill you in. Ryan and I had our engagement photos taken last weekend. We went for a winter sunrise theme. We didn't exactly have a choice on the winter portion, since it's freezing outside. But we loved the fog and frost and wanted to make sure it was incorporated in our photos.

Our first stop was Pittock Mansion at sunrise. Our second stop was Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon. We barely had to go onto the island to get some gorgeous scenery. I think my favorite photos are with the river behind us. We also chose to incorporate a lace-like blanket in some of the shots. Our wedding theme is lace and I thought this would be a simple (and warm) way to set the tone for our wedding. I had seen some photos on pinterest that used the scrabble pieces, so we also gave this a try by spelling out our wedding date and using my ring as the "o". I love how the pictures turned out!

My feet were numb by the end of this shoot, but it was well worth it to get these beautiful shots.

Engagement Photos - Pittock Mansion

Last weekend, my fiance, Ryan and I took our engagement photos. It was an awesome experience! First stop was Pittock Mansion, a French Renaissance-style "château" in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon. It was originally built as a private home for The Oregonian publisher Henry Pittock and his wife.

We set out early in the morning for sunrise, and boy was that a great idea because we had beautiful views and great lighting as the sun rose over Portland. Pittock Mansion soars 1,000 feet above the city's skyline and has fabulous views of downtown. It was quite foggy in the city below which made for awesome pictures as the tall buildings seemed to rise out of the clouds.

Though it was cold, in the 20s or so, it was well worth it!
